"Little one, it's a simple calculus. This universe has finite its resources, finite... if life is left unchecked, life will cease to exist. It needs correcting. And I'm the only one who knows that. At least, I'm the only one with the will to act on it." Infinity War is a film about sacrifice. And because the movie, more or less, belongs to Thanos, Infinity War takes on an uncomfortable edge, a Malthusian philosophy that largely goes unchallenged; because the ultimatum the film supposes is rather agnostic on morality...the one left standing is not the one who is Right, but the one with the will to sacrifice it all. "The hardest choices require the strongest wills." spoiler warning The only counter-point to Thanaos' ethos isn't offered by Tony Stark or any of the physical resistance he encounters on Titan, but rather, from Captain America; a man Thanos neither sees nor hears from. "We don't trade lives" is the ethos of Steve Rogers and his Secret Avengers. And the entire moral center of the film is fixated around confronting the horrors of equating human life to matters of currency exchange. How much are your convictions worth - really, truly worth to you? And who are you willing to lose to see them through to the end? The answer, for Thanos, is everything. Both characters are unflinching in their morality, but Thanos' question is one of ethics. And not the fun kind of ethics. Malthusian ethics requires us to look at life and assign a numerical value. Thanos is doing human calculus. His position comes from a place of cool indifference. Both Rogers and Thanos are beyond reproach in this regard - their sense of Right and Wrong is absolute. They both look at the ethical question at the heart of the film, plant their feet firmly in the ground, and tell the other "No, you move." But what makes Rogers a Hero and Thanos a Villain comes from the T/F orientation of their argument. There is something inherently crass about the idea of running the numbers and deciding one life is worth more than another -- Rogers dismisses the idea out of hand. There is something crass about denying the inherent worth and goodness of being human and alive and in love -- Rogers realizes it is not fair to ask Wanda to sacrifice her love for the universe. But Thanos is willing to look his love in the eyes and watch the light dim as he sacrifices her for his design. To Thanos it is grim, and he takes no joy in it, but it is also necessary. In a broader sense, the film's dire final moments reflect confronting this spiritual cost of doing what you believe, in your soul, to be the Right thing. Both characters see life in absolute shades of Black and White -- but the ends differ tremendously depending on your orientation. It comes down to a question of partiality. Rogers is personal - he cares about the people: the value of life and love and harmony. He is a man who cherishes his friendship to such an extent that he is willing to risk the world time and again for one man. Thanos is his antithesis - he's playing a numbers game. He is cold and indifferent to the value of human life, and is willing to trade his family, friends, and anything else to achieve a state of existential balance. It's why they can both be Type Ones and both offer staggeringly different answers to questions of sacrifice. Rogers the ISFJ 1w9 versus Thanos the INTJ 1w9.
