I rewatched this show after five years -- I would have agreed with the ISTJ and 8w9 typings earlier but I actually do see him as both a perceiver and an intuitive. He does get fixated and obsessive about certain things he feels he must do but I don't really see a systematic, control-oriented approach behind that. There's that side that shows up when he's concerned with survival and protection, but he's hardly like that when he's on his own... which is loose and averse to playing by hard rules. You could, however, say he's not as perceivery as Makishima because he doesn't question much the very system that doesn't allow him to exercise the full extent of his potential for freedom--but that argument as much more to do with N than P. Speaking of which, he's been compared to Makishima in the show (both by Saiga & loosely by Makishima himself) on a basis that coincides decently with intuition and it's generally exhibited with his insight into "the criminal mind": the conclusions he draws during his detective work tend to be possibility-oriented rather than particularly realistic or "safe." He isn't as N as Makishima but he understands people like Makishima in a way that I don't think S types would be so inclined to (extrapolating meaning behind Makishima's game, understanding motivations at play behind strange events). 9w8 over 8w9: his neutral state is passive and easygoing. It seems silly to boil it down to that, but he's soft to others in a way 8s wouldn't naturally be considerate of (but 9s would). He might be better described as a combination of 8 + 9 put together than as one of those with a strong wing, but he isn't prone to be dominating or controlling over his surroundings unless he is moved to do so (by causes that do have a lot do with type 8) and I think 9w8 could work better. 9w8 also does good job of showing who he feels he is (9) and who he shows himself to be (8).
